Dr. Suzanne Owens, Board Secretary

Dr. Suzanne Y. Owens is President of Mayland Community College, which has the mission of serving Mitchell, Avery and Yancey citizens with the opportunities for lifelong learning and an improved quality of life. 

Dr. Owens has served the College in numerous positions since 1988, beginning as a part-time grant writer, and then moving to Program Evaluator (2 years), Director of Institutional Effectiveness (5 years) and Vice President of Student Development (10 years).  She was named President in December 2005.  She has been a champion of the Learning College principles and believes that partnerships throughout our communities will unite us all in the pursuit of lifelong learning and a finer quality of life.

Dr. Owens grew up in Bakersville, NC, graduated from Bowman High School, received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from East Tennessee State University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from East Tennessee State University, and a Doctorate in Education from East Texas State University.  

She serves on numerous boards and is active in economic development initiatives in all three service area counties.
